You don’t have to invest in expensive equipment to take photos that show your items in their best light. Here are some tips to take beautiful product photos that help you sell:
1. Use a plain background.
This draws attention to your item. White or neutral colours generally work best. If you’re shooting shiny or reflective items, like jewellery, black may give better results. A large piece of cardboard is a cost-effective DIY option.
2. Use a tripod.
A tripod keeps the camera steady for clear, sharp photos. If you don’t have a tripod, place the camera on a flat surface and use the shutter timer to eliminate excess motion.
3. Turn off the flash.
Avoid using a flash, which can cause shadows, reflections, hot spots, and greyness. Take photos in a space flooded with natural light. If you still have shadows or dark areas, you can use a white card to reflect and diffuse the light around your subject.
4. Shoot in high resolution.
Let buyers see your item in more detail using our zoom and enlarge feature. We’d recommend you aim for 800-1600 pixels on the longest side. Our photo uloader can take images up to 7MB in size.
5. Capture all angles, details and blemishes.
Capture images of the top, bottom, and sides of your item, with detailed close-ups. Make sure you include photos that clearly show any flaws, scratches, or other imperfections.
6. Don’t overlay text.
No text or artwork, such as ‘Free postage,’ or seller logos, may be added to photos. You should include this information in the title, subtitle, or item description. Read our Image and Text Policy for more detailed guidelines.
