  • We’re updating our category and classification structure and we’ll automatically move affected listings to new categories

New Item Specifics Available Early May

Complete and accurate item specifics are essential to improving where your listings rank in search both on and off eBay. The more data you provide, the better we can match your items to what buyers are looking for.

We’re adding new item specifics in the below categories:

  • Clothing, Shoes & Accessories
  • Collectables
  • Media
  • Musical Instruments
  • Parts & Accessories
  • Sporting Goods

From early May, the new item specifics will be available in your listing flow as ‘Required Soon’. You’ll see more updates as these item specifics become available including the date they will become required.

New Category Changes

We periodically review and improve our category structure to create a more intuitive buying, selling and search experience. This year's changes - including adding, removing and renaming categories - will take effect in May.

If you have any listings in the affected categories, eBay will automatically move them into the most relevant category.

Please note that changing the category structure in the affected categories might result in a change in the eBay fees for selling items in these categories.

Some Listing Variations may no Longer be Available

When you have many similar items that have different variations such as colour or size, you can create a single fixed price listing that includes all the variations you offer. These are called multi-variation listings.

As part of our item specifics updates, we periodically revise the available variation details for these listings to clarify what items work best in a single listing and what items are more likely to get noticed as separate listings.

As a result, you may receive an error message while updating listings with variation details that are no longer valid. Learn more about listings with multiple variations and how these changes may affect your listings.

Next Steps

  • When you see the new item specifics requirements appear in a category you sell in, start adding them to your existing listings to improve search visibility
    • Keep an eye out for upcoming category changes
    • If you have items listed in any of the affected categories, you don’t need to do anything - we’ll automatically move any impacted listings to the most relevant category
  • We recommend you regularly review your listings and make sure they’re in the most relevant category
